Why Learn Latin?

Why Learn Latin at Corpus Christi Catholic Academy?

1. Builds Strong Language Foundations

Latin is the root of many English words and the basis of the Romance languages such as Spanish, French, and Italian. By studying Latin, students expand their vocabulary, gain a deeper understanding of grammar, and become stronger readers and writers in English. The study of Latin helps raise students' grasp of the English vocabulary and therefore reading comprehension, critical thinking, and the ability to discuss concepts in greater depth.

2. Strengthens Critical Thinking

Because Latin is a highly structured language, students learn to analyze sentence patterns, recognize details, and think logically. These analytical skills support learning in other subjects such as mathematics, science, and even computer programming.

3. Connects Students to History and Culture

Latin opens the door to the literature, philosophy, and historical writings of ancient civilizations such as Rome. Students gain a richer understanding of the foundations of Western civilization and the traditions that have shaped our world.

4. Supports Academic Success

Understanding Latin roots helps students perform better on vocabulary-heavy exams and prepares them to understand terminology used in fields such as law, medicine, theology, and science.

5. Forms Disciplined, Thoughtful Learners

Latin study encourages patience, focus, and attention to detail. These habits help students develop the intellectual discipline needed for success in all areas of learning.

A Lasting Academic Advantage

At Corpus Christi Catholic Academy, Latin is not simply about learning an ancient language—it is about forming the mind. Through Latin, students strengthen their language mastery, analytical thinking, and appreciation for the rich traditions of Catholic and classical education, preparing them for lifelong learning and success.

What your child will be learning in Latin class:

In grades K-3, students will be immersed in the Latin language by praying, singing songs, counting, as well as by saying and reading Latin words and simple sentences. In doing so, they will begin to acquire an intuitive knowledge of Latin vocabulary and grammar. An important text that they will learn Latin from is Mater Anserina, a Latin version of Mother Goose.

In grades 4-8, students will build on this foundation. By reading and discussing the text Lingua Latina: Per Se Illustrata by Hans Orberg (written entirely in Latin), students will not only expand their Latin reading abilities, but they will also increase their speaking and writing proficiency in Latin using increasingly complex sentence structures. Students will also learn longer prayers in Latin.
